My name is Kyra Hagan, and I am the breeder behind Maine Street Coons.
What began with one extraordinary cat has become a deeply personal commitment to preserving the beauty, health, temperament, and unmistakable character of America's native longhaired breed.
Maine Street Coons is a small, home-based preservation program in the Appalachian foothills of central Alabama. Our cats share our home and our lives. I am present for every birth. sleep beside our expectant mothers, and know each kitten from the moment it takes its first breath.
I am also a marketing executive in the pharmacy benefits industry, a wife, and a mother. This is not my full-time profession, but it is far more than a hobby.
It is the work I hope will become part of my legacy.

Long before Maine Street Coons, there was Dude.
Our family adopted our first mixed-breed Maine Coon from a local shelter in 2005. I had grown up in a house full of dog people, and Dude changed everything I believed about cats. He was loyal, emotionally intuitive, endlessly engaging, and deeply woven into the fabric of our family.
When we lost him to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, our hearts were broken. In time, that loss led me to the world of pedigreed Maine Coons—and then into a deeper study of the breed itself: its history, genetics, health challenges, written standard, and the responsibility of preserving it well.
The deeper I went, the more certain I became that this was where I was meant to be.
Before establishing my own program, I spent two years learning under an experienced breeder and mentor. I studied feline husbandry, genetics, pedigrees, newborn care, health, and the written breed standard. I am still, and will forever be, learning.
Today, I am an active exhibitor with The International Cat Association, where cats I have bred have earned recognition at the regional and international levels. Showing keeps our work accountable to the breed standard—but the ribbons have never been the point.
We breed slowly, keep our program intentionally small, and make decisions with generations in mind. Our goal is not to follow trends or exaggerate the Maine Coon, but to preserve the authentic American cat: substantial and balanced, intelligent, confident, affectionate, and beautiful without excess.

With IW BW SGC MaineStCoons Toe Be or Not Toe Be—our homebred International Winner.
Maine Street Coons may be my vision, but it has never been mine alone.
My daughter, Raeven, is an essential part of the program, helping with operations, logistics, photography, and care. My husband, Sean, has supported a dream that has required more time, travel, sacrifice, and heart than any of us imagined when it began.
Our cats do not live apart from us. They live here, with us.
That distinction shapes everything.

Our daughter, Raeven, often attends TICA cat shows along with me and my niece, Rileigh.
We have bred cats who have stood among the finest in the world. More importantly, we have watched our kittens become deeply loved companions in homes across the country.
I do not know exactly how the story of Maine Street Coons will ultimately be written. But I know what I hope it will say:

Oscar, our foundation king; with Dandy and Toby, his exceptional sons.
