Most families aren’t looking for a preservation breeder.
They’re looking for a healthy, affectionate Maine Coon that will become a beloved member of the family for many years to come.
The reality is that those things don’t happen by accident.
Every kitten is shaped by hundreds of decisions made long before it is ever born—decisions about health, temperament, genetics, socialization, and the long-term future of the breed.
At Maine Street Coons, we believe those decisions matter.
Because the choices we make today determine the kitten you bring home tomorrow.
Families fall in love with Maine Coons for a reason.
Their gentle personalities. Their intelligence. Their loyalty. Their rugged beauty. Their ability to become true members of the family.
Our mission is to protect those qualities for future generations through thoughtful, ethical breeding practices that prioritize health, temperament, and authentic breed type.
Because exceptional companions don’t happen by chance.
They happen by design.
Long before our kittens are ready to join their new families, they are surrounded by an extraordinary amount of care, attention, and hands-on involvement.
Approximately two weeks before a queen’s due date, she moves into our guest bedroom where she can relax in a quiet, comfortable environment designed specifically for motherhood. During this time, I move in with her so she is never alone as she prepares for delivery.
When labor begins, I am there every step of the way to support both mother and kittens. I monitor deliveries, dry newborn kittens, clear airways when necessary, tie and cut umbilical cords if needed, and ensure each kitten gets off to the strongest possible start. Most importantly, I make sure mom has everything she needs so she can focus on caring for her babies.
For the first week of life, I continue sleeping beside the nest so I can closely monitor the kittens around the clock.
Every kitten is weighed twice daily to ensure steady growth and development. While we allow mothers to do the important work nature intended, we intervene whenever necessary. If a kitten is struggling to gain weight or needs extra support, supplemental feeding and individualized care begin immediately.
Growing, Learning, and Exploring
Around three weeks of age, the kittens begin venturing out of the nest and are ready for their next big milestone.
At that point, they move into our dedicated kitten nursery—affectionately known as the Kitten Garden.
This is where kittens begin learning many of the skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives.
Within the Kitten Garden, they learn to:
• Reliably use the litter box • Transition from nursing to canned food and eventually dry kibble • Develop coordination, balance, and confidence • Engage in play, stalking, pouncing, and other natural feline behaviors • Interact with littermates and learn important social skills
At approximately six weeks of age, kittens receive their first intranasal vaccine to help support their developing immune systems.
Preparing for Life as a Family Member
At seven weeks of age, the kittens graduate from the nursery and join us in the main living areas of our home.
This is where socialization truly begins.
They are exposed to the everyday sights, sounds, and experiences of family life, including:
• Children and visitors • Household activity and routines • Televisions, music, and vacuum cleaners • Nail trims and grooming sessions • Bathing and blow drying • Car rides and veterinary visits • New environments, toys, and enrichment opportunities
Because our kittens are raised as part of the family, they learn from an early age that people are a source of comfort, affection, and fun.
By the time they leave for their new homes at 12–14 weeks of age, they have been extensively handled, carefully socialized, and thoughtfully prepared for the transition ahead.
We believe these early experiences play a significant role in shaping the confident, affectionate, people-oriented companions our families have come to know and love.
Because exceptional companions aren’t born.
They’re lovingly raised.
