My name is Kyra Hagan, and I'm the breeder behind the remarkable cats of Maine Street. Breeding and showing Maine Coon cats is my passion and hobby, but not my full-time job. In addition to running our preservation breeding program, I'm a full-time healthcare marketing executive and a proud wife and mom.
I'm Raeven, and I manage cattery operations, logistics, photography, and routine veterinary care for Mom. Together, we are proud to raise some of the most beautiful, well-bred, and highly socialized Maine Coon kittens in the country.
Our family has been owned by Maine Coons for nearly 20 years, ever since we brought our first mixed-breed Maine Coon, Dude, home in 2005. That amazing boy changed every misperception I held about cats after growing up in a houseful of dog people, and he forever changed our family for the better! He was my husband's best friend, keeper of secrets, and our daughter's first love.
We were all devastated when we lost Dude to HCM. A few months later, we found an extremely reputable, experienced Maine Coon breeder in Georgia and brought two Maine Coons home to try and fill the holes in our broken hearts. Not even a year later, we decided to take on three. And if you're going to have three, what is the harm in having four? You know where I'm going with this...
My husband, Sean, and I are proud Americans, blessed to be breeding America's native cats!
They say when one door closes, another always opens. Losing Dude in early 2019 opened the door to the world of Maine Coon breeding and pedigreed cat shows. For a period of about two years, I worked with a great Maine Coon breeder and mentor who taught me about the breed's history, feline husbandry, genetics, pedigrees, the written breed standard, newborn care, health conditions, show etiquette, and many other things that helped me get started.
To be a great Maine Coon breeder, I firmly believe that you must love researching and learning because veterinary medicine and breeding best practices are constantly evolving. I have a voracious appetite for research literature, reading books written for veterinarians and breeders, taking online classes, networking with other active Maine Coon breeders in the United States and abroad, and asking a ton of questions. The preservation breeding hobby really keeps me on my toes!
Today, our ethical Maine Coon breeding program is built on these core principles: Breeding Maine Coon cats takes time, patience, lots of money, a great willingness to learn, the support of a network of like-minded breeders, the ability to be kind, humble, and approachable, and the resilience to bounce back from mistakes. A little dumb luck and having a good eye for a cat that conforms closely to the breed standard certainly doesn't hurt!
While there is no perfect cat, striving for perfection separates a good Maine Coon breeder from a great one. Being able to see and be honest about the faults in my cats is essential, as is learning how to pair cats to breed imperfections out of my lines. You see, breeding is grounded in genetic science, but it is also an art form. I'm blessed to be at the stage in life where I can invest a significant amount of my time, love, and paychecks into this passion and strive to do something meaningful for the breed that has done so much for me.
