Our Adoption Process:

Discover the Maine Street Coons' Difference

At Maine Street Coons, we believe adopting a kitten or retired young adult is more than just finding a pet—it’s about creating the perfect match for both you and your new furry family member. Our hands-on, high-touch approach is designed to ensure the needs and personalities of both cats and humans are thoughtfully considered. With only four to five litters a year, we raise and place a select 20 to 30 kittens annually, ensuring every match is made with care and love.

How Our Process Works

Apply to Join the VIP Waiting List:

  • Complete our online application
  • Participate in a no-obligation Discovery Call
  • Claim your spot on our priority wait list (once approved)

Wait Times and List Management:

  • Our priority wait list is capped at 20 approved applications to ensure wait times remain 12 months or shorter. Once we reach this limit, the list is temporarily closed.
  • On average, we have a litter every three to four months, but litter sizes, and therefore wait times, vary.
  • Adopters who are flexible and open-minded about gender and color will have the shortest wait times.

Matching Process:

  • When they are eight weeks old, kittens are offered to individuals on the wait list based on temperament and overall fit first, with buyer preferences considered second.
  • Highest priority is given to adopters of sibling pairs followed by existing Maine Street Coons' families.
  • During the matching process, you'll receive an individual assessment of the kitten being offered, including details such as size, temperament, and personality traits.
  • Upon request, we can arrange a virtual introduction to allow you to "meet" the individual kitten being offered by live video chat.
  • You're never obligated to accept the kitten offered; you can pass on a kitten twice and still remain on the priority wait list.

Reservation Process:

  • If you verbally accept the kitten being offered, you have 24-hours from receipt to return the signed agreement and non-refundable, non-transferrable $1,000 deposit.
  • If you do not return the signed agreement and deposit within 24 hours, we may move on to the next appropriate person on the wait list.
  • Once a kitten is reserved for you, you will receive individual updates and photos at least weekly to keep you connected as your kitten grows.
  • We will also send you all the information you need to prepare for a seamless homecoming.

Going Home:

  • Kittens go to their new homes between 14-16 weeks of age, depending on how they have matured and if they are thriving.
  • Health and emotional maturity are critical factors in determining the timing, ensuring each kitten is fully prepared for the transition.
  • We will schedule your 1:1 kitten pick-up appointment once we are certain your kitten is well-prepared to go home.
  • Purchase agreements are signed and balances are paid in full at the time of pickup. We will discuss payment options when we schedule your appointment.
