Our Adoption Process:

Discover the Maine Street Coons' Difference

At Maine Street Coons, we believe adopting a kitten or retired young adult is more than just finding a pet—it’s about creating the perfect match for both you and your new furry family member. Our hands-on, high-touch approach is designed to ensure the needs and personalities of both cats and humans are thoughtfully considered. With only four to five litters a year, we raise and place a select 20 to 30 kittens annually, ensuring every match is made with care and love.

How Our Process Works

Wait Times and List Management:

  • In general, we always have a wait list. Very rarely do we have available kittens.
  • Our wait list is capped at 20 approved applications to ensure wait times remain to 12 months or shorter. Once we reach this limit, the we will temporarily remove the application  from the website.
  • On average, we have a litter every three months, but nature is in charge. Litter sizes, and therefore wait times, vary.
  • Adopters who are flexible and open-minded about gender and color will have the shortest wait times.

How to Join the Approved Adopters Wait List:

  • Complete our online application
  • Participate in a no-obligation Discovery Call
  • Claim your spot on our priority wait list (if approved)

While You Wait:

Matching Process:

  • As tempting as it is to pick a newborn kitten based on color or pattern alone, we do not reserve specific kittens for anyone before eight weeks, when they are weaned and vaccinated.
  • We often decide to keep kittens for show or breeding, or place them in other programs where they can help improve the gene pool. For this reason, it's a good idea to refrain from getting attached to a particular kitten too early.
  • Once they have been examined by our veterinarian, the kittens we decide to make available are offered to individuals on the wait list based on temperament and overall fit first, with buyer preferences considered second.
  • Highest priority is given to adopters of sibling pairs followed by existing Maine Street Coons' families. Then we work down the wait list on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Upon request, we can arrange a virtual introduction to allow you to "meet" the individual kitten being offered by live video chat before finalizing your decision.
  • You're never obligated to accept the kitten offered; you can pass on a kitten twice and still remain on the wait list.

Reservation Process:

  • If you verbally accept the kitten being offered, we will send you a reservation agreement the same day. You have 24-hours from receipt to return the signed reservation agreement and pay your non-refundable, non-transferrable $1,000 deposit.
  • If you do not return the signed agreement and deposit within 24 hours, we may move on to the next person on the wait list.
  • Once a kitten is reserved for you, you will receive individual photos and video updates weekly to keep you connected as your kitten grows.
  • We will also send you all the information you need to prepare for a seamless homecoming.

Going Home:

  • Kittens go to their new homes between 14-16 weeks of age.
  • Health and emotional maturity determine when they are ready.
  • We will schedule your 1:1 kitten pick-up appointment once we are certain your kitten is well-prepared to go home.
  • Purchase agreements are signed and balances are paid in full at the time of pickup.
